The Großglockner nature adventure

Mount Großglockner, with a height of 3,798 m is Austria’s highest mountain. It is located in the border region between Carinthia and Eastern Tyrol. At the foot of the Großglockner is the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the Pasterze.

In 1928, the first steps were made in the construction of a high alpine road which were overseen by Franz Rehrl, head of the local government. In 1935 this enormous project was completed and the road was opened to great ceremony and celebrations. In the intervening 65 years the “Großglockner Hochalpenstraße” road has been travelled by almost a million visitors every year thus making the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße road the second most popular tourist attraction after Schönbrunn Castle.

This “nature attraction” which offers such wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys can be enjoyed by car, motorbike or coach. You can always stop off and enjoy some of the many exhibitions and high quality restaurants along the route of the Großglockner alpine road Some of the exhibitions you can visit are:

The "Tauern – Paths across the Alps" Exhibition

"Alpine Nature Show" Museum

"Construction of the road" Exhibition

Magic World of the glockner pastures
