In 1928, the first steps were made in the construction of a high alpine road which were overseen by Franz Rehrl, head of the local government.
In 1935 this enormous project was completed and the road was opened to great ceremony and celebrations.
In the intervening 65 years the “Großglockner Hochalpenstraße” road
has been travelled by almost a million visitors every year thus making the
Großglockner Hochalpenstraße road the second most popular tourist attraction after
Schönbrunn Castle.
